DVD Chief is a slick, highly useful program for movie buffs.
This application allows you to organize your movie collection automatically, edit and then enjoy the fruits of your labor via the perfectly browseable, searchable database that puts all the info you need right at your fingertips.
Adding movies
You can enter your movies into DVD Chief in various ways, from letting the app automatically process movies you physically enter into the DVD drive to adding films individually from files. The app then automatically finds all the information available about your movie from various internet sources, and fills in the fields available.
DVD Chief is a very flexible app, so if the information isn't just as you want it, you can edit it manually. The software also allows you to add movie information in whatever language you want, and there's also a place for your notes, which is really important if you're a serious cinema fan.
Viewing your collection
When it comes to viewing your movie information, DVD Chief doesn't let you down. It provides all the information you need, from actors to production statistics and genres to reviews in an easily modified (and skinned) interface. You can also view your movies in the Lists tab, which is an interesting overview of your collection.
Problems to be solved
Unfortunately, we found a few problems with DVD Chief, not least with the file search, which took a long time and was unstoppable - literally! We asked it to search our hard drive for movies, but when we realized that it was too big a job to undertake with so few filters and tried to stop it, it resisted stubbornly and we had to shut DVD Chief down from End Task.
The DVD Chief interface can be a little hard to navigate - when you delve too far into a menu, it can be hard to get back to the home screen - the best way around this is by using the back and forward buttons at the top left of the DVD Chief interface.
DVD Chief is an excellent - and promising - app, but it's still got a few wrinkles that need to be ironed out. We're looking forward to seeing the next version.

We all know that we should back up our computers in case the worse happens, but how many of us actually do it? Some people are put off by the fact that backing up seems time-consuming and boring, or difficult and complicated. With Ocster 1-Click Backup, it's neither!
Ocster 1-Click Backup is pretty simple, so more advanced users, or those who like more control, probably won't be too impressed. If you want to keep things simple, though, it's perfect. All you have to do to use is it specify what, where and when you want to back up - there are no extra windows or wizards, just select from the options you are presented with when you click on each section.
One of the nice features of Ocster 1-Click Backup is this centralized simplicity. All the actions you need to carry out as the user take place in the main interface, and that's also where the system status and backup logs are displayed. There's no need to go searching for the information you need - Ocster 1-Click Backup presents it all there by default.
Ocster 1-Click Backup doesn't complicate things with extra settings options either - in fact, all you can change is the interface language. Restoring your computer from a backup is also very simple, although we were disappointed to learn that burning a rescue disk needs a separate download.
Ocster 1-Click Backup is one of the simplest backup apps we've seen, but it does the job very well.

Pidgin is an instant messenger client that is perfect for people who need to communicate with friends who use different applications, or for those who like a little more control over their chatting. The Pidgin interface is quite simple, which for many is a plus, although it has most, if not all, of the features found on other clients. Obviously, the major plus to using Pidgin is that it can support multiple accounts on different networks, so you'll only need the one interface to chat with all your contacts on all your accounts.
Picture the situation. You love Google Talk. Your family is stuck on Windows Live Messenger. Your friends in Poland all love Gadu-Gadu and, for some strange reason, your best friend insists on ICQ. You obviously have an IM crisis, and in the interests of peace and friendship, you need to sort it, fast.
When you install Pidgin, it will ask you for the details of the accounts you want to add. Pidgin can remember your passwords for you, but if you do not enable this option you'll have to sign in every time. Once you're set up, you can do all the things you would expect - change your icon, create groups, configure alerts, send files and even add bunches of Pidgin plug-ins.
For the more technically minded, one of Pidgin's best features are the configuration options. These are much easier to access than in other applications and allow you to manage certificates, toggle advanced settings for your accounts, individually or together, set up proxy servers and even join chat rooms. Sounds too complicated? Don't worry, that's the beauty of Pidgin - you can get as technical or as simple as you like. It's the perfect client for everyone.
Simple, effective and multi-protocol - what more could you ask for?!

CloudDeck is music streamer that taps into Soundcloud's database to serve you songs.
CloudDeck is written on the Adobe Air platform so this app will work across systems. It's a good media streamer that lets you search SoundCloud's huge database of songs. As is the case with Soundcloud, the quality of songs uploaded by artists vary. If you're looking to stream songs by a particular mainstream artist, this app isn't for you. If instead you want to discover undiscovered artists and DJs remixing songs, then CloudDeck is great!

While the main function of CloudDeck is to serve you music, it adds social media integration with Facebook and Twitter. If you find an interesting song that you want to share, you can click the Facebook or Twitter icon at the top of the application to share it with your friends or followers. You can also find and follow artists within CloudDeck. Following an artist will automatically deliver their new tracks to your feed.
Users can also use CloudDeck's search feature to find new music. There's options to search by artist, user, or group. Searching by group is interesting as it allows you to find groups of people who have similar tastes in music as you.
In use, we found CloudDeck to be a bit unstable and searching was more of a miss than a hit. A few of our searches returned no results and for some searches that did yield results, they weren't very relevant. Also disappointing is inability to upload your own tracks directly from the application, although you can download tracks from other artists if they allow it, but it will open up a browser to get the link.
Overall, CloudDeck has some great ideas to make Soundcloud more social, but its developers need to work on stability and usability.

Mz 7 Optimizer is an all in one utility that boosts and maintains the performance of your Windows 7 system while providing you with some hidden Windows tweaks.
There are tons of PC optimization applications out there but I've never seen one as full-featured as Mz 7 Optimizer. There are pages and pages of optimization tweaks for the user to explore. Each one is described in detail and you can apply tweaks in bulk. There is even a game mode, which disables anything that would hinder the performance of playing games (including Aero).
For those who don't want so much detail, Mz 7 Optimizer comes with an automated optimization mode that lets you choose what you want to optimize and it will do it all automatically. Auto optimization was the easiest to use and less tech savvy users should stick to this mode.
Performance of Mz 7 Optimizer is generally good but defrags take longer than apps like Auslogics Disk Defrag and Smart Defrag. Other than defragmentation, tweaks were applied quickly. The performance of our machine saw slight performance bumps but remember that our machines are very well maintained!
One minor downside to Mz 7 Optimizer is that the app will require a reboot. It is also recommended that you run the application without any applications open. This will help safeguard against program conflicts.
Overall, Mz 7 Optimizer is a great freeware application that has a ton of features yet is still accessible to the average user with its automatic optimization mode.

The formats that Doxillion Document Converter handles are largely text formats like .doc, .pdf and .odt. It might surprise you to see other, non-text formats in the Output format options, but don't be fooled - in order to use the image formats, you need to install extra software.
Doxillion Document Converter works like most other converters out there. Add files by dragging and dropping, or by using the Add Files button from inside the program. In the bottom bar, you'll find all the options necessary to convert your files - the format, the location and settings for that particular file. Once everything is to your liking, hit Convert.
The Doxillion Document Converter conversion process is fast and easy and very straightforward. You'll see the conversion happening, and when it's done, you'll have the option to open the file you've converted. Doxillion Document Converter also allows you to convert in batches, which makes large jobs much quicker.
The settings options for Doxillion Document Converter cover the basics, but aren't too complex, meaning that most users will be able to get to grips with them easily. It's hard to get very excited about this program, but if you need to convert between the major text formats, and you want a quick and easy job, Doxillion Document Converter is as good an app as any.
